CREATING INCLUSIVE SPACES WHERE EVERYONE CAN THRIVE
Antoinette Scully is currently the Membership and Community Engagement Specialist for the Unitarian Universalist Women’s Federation, an associate member organization of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). Their staff position encompasses building programming and creating relationships with members and local organizations to further justice work centering on women.
In addition to their day job, this Los Angeles-based writer, activist, and educator is dedicated to creating spaces built on the principles of inclusivity, equal access, education, and building a better community. They speak publicly on social justice, race, and literary activism, all rooted in their Unitarian Universalist faith.
Antoinette has trained in Movement Chaplaincy work through the Faith Matters Network. They lead monthly gatherings, Care for Activists in Liberation Movements (CALM), to center the support needs of activists and front-line workers. This healing space provides music, guided meditations, and a short reflection.
Antoinette is a co-founder and Lead Organizer of Valley Justice Coalition (VJC), a community project that creates justice campaigns in the San Fernando Valley. VJC’s largest event is an annual “Night Out for Safety and Liberation,” which is organized in collaboration with the Ella Baker Center.
In 2023, Antoinette attempted their only run at public office in the Special Election for Los Angeles City Council District 6. As an open abolitionist, their campaign centered on bringing care to the Angelinos who had been left out of the conversation. They believe that communities need far less policing and that cities have to invest more resources in housing, transportation, and environmental justice.
They are the founder of Black & Bookish Literary Collective, an expansive blog and website dedicated to celebrating Black literature. From 2017-2021 they grew B&B into a Literary Editing Collective, specializing in their Sensitivity Reading consultations. That same year, they launched In Conversation: with Antoinette Scully Podcast, where they interview Black authors about their process, progress, and prose. In 2021, they were nominated for an AAMBC Literary Award in the category of Literary Activist of the Year. They have also served as a panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts sponsored “Big Read” grant program.
In 2015, they co-founded the comprehensive sexual health education nonprofit More Than Sex-Ed. This organization provides science-based classes to parents, teens, and tweens with age-appropriate conversations about sex. They also serve on the Board of Directors at More Than Sex-Ed.
Antoinette serves on the Vision and Values Board of the UU Justice Ministry of California (UUJMCA), First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles's Board of Trustees, and the Los Angeles Metro Service Council in the San Fernando Valley. They have an M.A. from the University of Southern California and a dual B.A from Stetson University in DeLand, FL.
